“Eternal” 2001 James C. Purdy
Subject: Abstract, Pyramids of Giza
Acrylic on Canvas -- 36" x 48"
Painted Canvas Sides
I've tried to express myself in artwork sporadically from 1970-1995. I took up painting again in June of 2000 and painted for one year, doing 27 pieces.
My wife Gail, daughter Sarah and I took a three continents cruise and visited Athens, Delphi, Santorini, Egypt, Israel, West Bank, Rhodes, Ephesus, Istanbul and Mikonos. That trip inspired many colorful paintings. The Delphi work skews the temple of Apollo ruins toward the sky, capturing the awesome beauty of Delphi and the surrounding mountians and olive groves. The Istanbul Cistern is the flip side of Delphi, showing a dank, forboding place, yet eerily compelling.
"Eternal" is a work of color and shape reflecting the pyramids of Giza, the stained glass of Christianity, the red pyramid is like a Jewish yarmulke and there are no human or animal representations adhering to the Moslem rules. The Middle East is the crossroads of man searching for meaning in life and death.
I took a break from painting for awhile in the summer of 2001, and planned to resume only when inspired. Unfortunately I was inspired by the horrific acts on 9-11 in NYC, DC and PA. I created a piece named "Missing Stars" as a tribute to our fallen heros, the victims, the firefighters, police and all rescue workers who gave their lives just showing up for work and to save others.
I only painted two pictures in 2002 and one in 2003. When it moves me, I'm sure I'll have another flurry of work.
Thanks for looking at my Masterpieces for the Moment.
